Budget Camping Safari – 8 Days of Adventure in Botswana

This 8-day budget safari is designed for adventurous travelers who want a raw, immersive experience in Botswana’s pristine wilderness without breaking the bank. You’ll travel in a small group, sleep under canvas in basic dome tents, and explore Botswana’s premier wildlife areas — from the waterways of the Okavango Delta to predator-rich Savuti and elephant-dense Chobe. It’s an authentic, close-to-nature journey that connects you directly to the sights, sounds, and rhythms of the African bush.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Maun – Camping Orientation

Arrive in Maun, where your guide will greet you and introduce you to the group. You’ll settle into a simple campsite outside town, where you’ll receive a full briefing and help set up your tent — a skill you’ll be using throughout the trip. Enjoy your first night by the campfire, meet your fellow travelers, and listen to the call of distant hyenas.

Day 2: Into the Okavango Delta – Mokoro Ride & Bush Camping

After an early breakfast, travel by open vehicle to the mokoro (dugout canoe) station, then glide into the Okavango Delta’s peaceful waterways with local polers. Reach your wild bush camping site and set up camp. The day is spent on foot and by mokoro, exploring islands and learning about wildlife and plants. You’ll prepare meals together with your guide and fall asleep to the sounds of frogs and night birds.

Day 3: Okavango Delta – Walks & Nature Immersion

Wake up early for a morning bush walk with a local tracker. This is your chance to see zebras, lechwe, giraffes, and possibly elephants up close and on foot. Return to camp for a siesta and lunch. In the afternoon, enjoy another mokoro outing or relax by the water. You’ll gain a deep appreciation for the delta’s fragile ecosystem and unique silence.

Day 4: Drive to Khwai Community Area – Game Drive Begins

Pack up and transfer by 4×4 to the Khwai Community Concession, which borders Moremi. This area is rich in wildlife and allows night drives. After arriving and setting up camp, you’ll head out for a sunset game drive. Expect elephants, buffalo, and possibly big cats. Return to camp for dinner and your first night in predator country.

Day 5: Khwai – Full-Day Game Drive & Night Safari

Spend the full day exploring the Khwai area. In the morning and afternoon, drive through woodlands and riversides, spotting hippos, crocodiles, and birds. After dinner, you’ll embark on a night drive — a special experience that might reveal nocturnal species like bush babies, civets, or even a hunting leopard. Overnight at camp again, surrounded by the wilderness.

Day 6: Travel to Savuti – Harsh Wild Beauty

Today’s journey takes you to the remote and rugged Savuti region. The road is bumpy and dusty, but you’ll pass through wild country and may spot wildlife along the way. Upon arrival, set up camp and take a short game drive to explore the area. Savuti is known for its lions, elephants, and stark landscapes. Prepare for a true bush experience.

Day 7: Drive to Chobe National Park – Boat Safari in Kasane

After a morning drive, head toward Kasane on the edge of Chobe National Park. You’ll swap your tents for a basic lodge or campsite near town. In the late afternoon, take a peaceful boat cruise along the Chobe River. Elephants, buffalo, and countless birds are visible from the water — a perfect way to end your last full safari day.

Day 8: Departure from Kasane

After breakfast, say farewell to your travel group. You’ll be dropped at Kasane Airport for your departure or onward travel. This marks the end of a thrilling adventure through some of Africa’s wildest terrain — an experience few forget.
